Cleaning Articles - How To Articles

Spring is in the air. Flowers are starting to bloom. You probably took a lazy stroll through the garden area at your local hardware store, and now you’ve got the itch to get outside and get to work.

Many homeowners in the St. Louis area are under the misconception that pressure is what actually does the cleaning. That is just simply not true. The right detergent is what does the cleaning. You can wash your home the right way with the pressure of a garden hose.

So before you go spend $300-$500 dollars on a pressure washer, we have a solution for you that will work better, be more efficient, and chances are cost under $100 dollars to build

How to Pressure Wash Your Home without Using a Pressure Washing Machine

First, you’re going to need some parts. Go to a local farm store and tell them you need a 12 volt agriculture pump. They should have what is called a “Shurflo” pump. You are looking for one that has a 1.8 G.P.M. rating on it. Make sure they give you the fitting to plumb this shurflo, as well as some hose clamps. You will also need a 3/8 plastic valve to shut the detergent off from the shurflo.

Next, you are going to need a tee. Most garden hose is 5/8 hose, so you will need the two ends of the tee to be 5/8’s and the bottom of the tee to be 3/8’s. You will also need about 10 feet of 3/8’s poly hose. You will also need a deep cycle marine battery to run your Shurflo pump.

Now, it’s time to put everything together. You will need 2 short pieces of garden hose. Screw the one end onto your spicket. About 5 feet away, cut your garden hose and put the clamp on and insert the tee and tighten. On the other end of the tee, put your clamp on and about 5 feet of garden hose with the male end on it where you can screw something on to it.

On the bottom part of your tee, hook on your 3/8 poly hose, install the valve into the line, and put the end of the 3/8 hose on the pump. Make sure that line is going to the arrow pointing towards the outside of the pump. Put the other 3/8 hose onto the pump with the arrow that is facing towards the pump. Make sure all clamps are secure. Some pumps come already plumbed. Make sure your pump has plumbing fittings before leaving the hardware store.

Now it’s time to find some cleaner for your home. The best choice is a local pool store. We don’t know how much to tell you to get, but you should get 5 gallons of 12% Sodium Hypochlorite. Add about ¼ cup of household soap into this mix. Stir well.

We’re almost ready to start cleaning. With the valve shut off from your pump, fill your garden hose with water first. When you’re ready to start cleaning, hook the pump up to the battery and turn the valve on. Make sure you have your trigger down on your sprayer. It should start foaming some. Start at the bottom of your home and work towards the top. Just spray the cleaner on at first. Don’t try and “force” the mold off of your home. Let it dwell for about 5 minutes; Shut the valve off of the pump, now you can rinse. Make sure to keep all your plants wet with water and rinsed very well, as well as your windows to prevent spotting.
